I reassembled the shift tower into the transmission and re-adjusted the cables with the knowledge of where the L lock was supposed to be. I was setting the cables with the shift tower too low). Nothing looked damaged or out of place so I function tested the shift tower and noticed that what I believed was the "home" position with the L lock was actually higher than what I was trying to set it at (i.e. I ended up pulling the shift tower assembly out of the transmission and inspecting it as well as taking a look down inside the transmission. I am hoping to remove the shift tower assembly tonight and confirm that the mechanism is functioning properly before I start trying to tear into the transmission itself. Even after moving the gearing in the transmission I am still not able to shift the transmission into 2nd. I have been asking about the "L" lock because I am wondering if the apparent failure of the lock could have in any way jammed the shift tower and be preventing it from moving.Īs an additional update, yesterday I tried to advance the transmission by shifting it into first and cranking the motor around by hand to re-align things in the transmission in-case a syncro was hung up or something similar. All of the positions work and feel like they should but when I try to move from Neutral to 2nd with the tower all the way pushed down I can not make any movement towards 2nd as if there is something physically blocking the shifter. After 2 tries at adjusting the cables and not being able to get 2nd I disconnected the cables and started trying to shift the transmission directly at the shift tower on the transmission by hand. To clarify my issue, I am not having a cable adjustment issue, I physically can not shift the transmission into 2nd gear. Thank you for the video link, it will be helpful once I get the shifting issue resolved. I'm already too far in to back out now, but if I have to pull this transmission out again I don't want to put any more time into hooking things up or burn up any more 1-time use bolts. I then disconnected the cables entirely and manually tried to place the shift tower on the transmission into 2nd gear but it will not go in.ĭoes anyone have any thoughts? I don't know if this is related to the "L" lock no longer functioning or if it is a sign of something much bigger. I tried adjusting the cable again but same result. I got into the car and removed the shifter lock pin and tested out the shifter to see how it felt in each gear and noticed that I could not seem to select 2nd gear. I tried simply holding the mechanism down and adjusting the cables which initially seemed to work. It will turn up and slide in as expected but when I release pressure on the shift tower it will not stay down. I now have the transmission in the car and I was trying to adjust the shifter cables but now the "L" lock no longer functions. In the process of lubricating things and moving the transmission around I moved the shift tower assembly into multiple gear locations (I did not intentionally check for engagement in each position) with no issue. I bought the donor from a member on here and it is from a wrecked ~2000 New Beetle ~151k with transmission code ERJ.īefore installing the transmission I tested the functionality of the "L" lock on the shift tower on the transmission and it worked properly.
